These Female Words
These words keep roaring in the silence
You could hear the drop of a pin
These words capture me like a camera lens
‘LIKE THE SKIN YOU ARE IN’
These words have been ringing in my ears;
For years they have been the cry of all +-men,
Sometimes it still feels like no one really cares:
‘PROMOTE DIVERSITY IN REPRESENTATIONS OF WOMEN’
These words should be given media clearance
Shown on screen and in every book chapter
‘LESS FOCUS ON PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
AND MORE FOCUS ON CHARACTER’
These words should become a chant
Like evidence of a miracle that had been prayed
Not like a dogs tired whimper or tired pant
‘MORE HONESTY IN THE WAY WOMEN ARE POTRAYED’
I am guilty of this due to my socialization
I have no excuses now due to my education
I was once a victim and made others a victim
I join the voices that repeat these words
‘WOMEN ARE INTELLIGENT’
‘WOMEN SHOULD BE EDUCATED’
‘WOMEN ARE SELF-ASSURED, DIVERSE, STRONG’
I join the voices that repeat these words
‘BE CONFIDENT’
‘BE WHO YOU ARE- NOT WHO SOCIETY TELLS YOU TO BE’
(Citations from Patricia Gentile's study (2007): Popular Culture and Female Sexuality: Concuming the 'Representations'. Published by: Media Action Media).
