There Were Words
There were words
that played along with the melody
but I never once heard them,
never understanding their meaning
not really listening
as the bass beat strained at my heart.
Every note touched the pounding
matching its beat
yet not part of its rhythm.
It was music to my ears
with only you in my sight
and the reality of all we had.
