There is a Darkness

There is a darkness Between the trees tonight, There is a darkness And I have the light Be it only a lantern A flame and a wick, It is enough to illuminate Every branch and stick A black veil ahead And no moon in the sky, All is silent around Until some thing does cry O, what is that thing? Just what can it be?, A spook, spectre or ghost I have to go and see One step, then one more As curiosity overcomes fright, For there is a darkness And I have the light.

Dear Karen, Your poem is a captivating exploration of courage and curiosity in the face of the unknown. I love the way you establish the stark contrast between the encroaching darkness and the small, yet persistent, flame of the lantern. This simple image becomes a powerful symbol of resilience and determination. The final line, "One step, then one more / As curiosity overcomes fright," perfectly embodies the poem's message of courage finding light in the darkness. Blessings, Daniel

I enjoyed this read. I liked how "I have the light" was in the first stanza and repeated in the last stanza.
