The Writes of Long Ago
We were schooled on verse and etiquette
On verbs and nouns and predicates
We grew to know the masters
That had written long before
But now, as time has gone so by
To books? Kids, these days, don’t give the eye
They know not of the famous writes
The ones, we do adore
Pray tell that they not disappear
Those classic writes, that’s what I fear
To oblivion I dare not wish
These classic writes to go
Although, through time,words have changed
And life for us has rearranged
But, from those writes we still can take
What we truly need to know
As dreams were penned in blood, not ink
Thirst quenched for us by offered drink
A chalice of words, through lips they flow
Of the writes of long ago
So take from them, borrow, inhale
Breathe in the truths, let them prevail
Allow the words, through you, to flow
Of the writes of long ago
Let not them go
The writes of long ago
