Notes About The Poem

Birth is an eternal wonder, ever-changing and evolving within parallel universes.

The Wonder of Birth In Parallel Universes

The brittle chrysalis,
green and hard
as a milkweed pod,
hides nature’s pupa
in cottony softness.
Wrinkled and wet,
a winged jewel emerges.

Mother’s birth sac splits.
Baptismal waters
Spill her babe’s
Soft flesh, fully formed
Onto linen’s
Glaring whiteness.

Sunshine dries
The butterfly’s
Gossamer wings.
Its silky whiteness
shimmers transparently
Against the opaque sun.

A newborn squalls.
Tiny fingers
Curl in a tight ball.
Each digit is a
Prayer bead
Chanting its presence.

Wings and fingers
Antennae and toes
Displace space that
Minutes before was
Unknown, unclaimed.

A fantastic piece of poetry, Kathy...truly Gobsmacked!! You ably demonstrate your innate trait here at its very strongest: strong observational powers; a trait that is evident throughout all of your excellent poetry...you have the critical eye of an Emily Dickinson! Really enjoyed this one; why is it on this site that some of the best poetry gets constantly overlooked in favour of, what at times, can only be described as - mere dross! Ahh well! My very warmest regards, Kathy...as always! :) john

your poem shows an astute awareness of life and its mysteries, both are fragile in their being... dear poet
