The Way He Was

The background din
Heard in a silent room
Where life is slipping away
The tattered chairs
The medicinal smell
As a stoic life lays still.

The reflections of a life well-lived
The shadows of ebony and light
The heaviness of disbelief
The relief of pain’s release –
   Leaves your soul to bleed.

The tall frame with silken hair
The voice that laughed so freely –
The hazel eyes that pierced my soul
The lips that so gently kissed me,
The weathered hands that touched gently,
The arms that embraced the fear away –

On this day, one soul went home,
And another lost its way.
