The War You Wage
Your feelings about me are
Visions clouded by memories of your past
Lovers and haters and all things greater
You remain guarded
And dictated by fear
Keeping me near…enough
But not too close
The war you fight is with yourself, not with me
But can won with grace and ease by surrendering to your own insecurities
I can promise you one thing…
Keeping me at arm’s length will only prolong the inevitability
Of you suffering through this
Lonely
And drowning in self-pity
I will not go down with you, NO
I will fight and push with all might to prove
That you have nothing to lose
And everything to gain
By opening your heart again
The valve so tightly closed, so closely guarded
A soldier standing so strong
Yet so broken hearted that you can’t even identify the real enemy.
But we both know it isn’t me
So you fight a war within yourself whole-heartedly believing
That it is the only way, you wage the battle everyday
Until you are bare knuckled and bleeding and bruised
Until your soul is weary and every last drop of strength has been used
Until your vision is clouded by memories of your past
And the way things were
Until your vision is clouded by memories of her
Lovers and haters, blind to all things greater
And once again, you are dictated by fear
Wishing only that you had held her near
Wishing only to surrender
