The lines "...Effort and dedication will be rewarded
They are the 'magic' on your side." originally reads:
"...Effort and dedication will be rewarded
And Sooner Magic is on your side."
The line change was made to make the meaning more generically applicable in terms of motivation. Still, the poem is dedicated to my Oklahoma Sooners, all sports, all athletes.
Inspired by student athletes in general, but OU Sooners specifically. Those of us who were not student athletes, particularly at the collegiate level, may not have a full understanding or appreciation of the personal sacrifice required to maintain the integrity of your grades AND your dreams. No...it isn't all about winning, but it is far more than "just a game." Life lessons are learned...win or lose. I have often reflected on the character required of athletes who continue to strive and persevere in spite of an obvious impending loss. An example: when Tennessee Chattanooga, a division II school, comes to Norman, Oklahoma to play football against the mighty OU Sooners (the most wins and points scored in the modern era of college football), they know the probable outcome; yet they step into a hostile environment and do the best they can until the game is over. Even in losing, that better readies them for life, teaching them to continue despite frustrations and anguish. To apply one's self and maintain focus, despite the situation. Losses are lessons. Learn from them, use them to improve, then put them behind.
Here's to college athletes! Hoo-ah!
