The Value of Learning To Read
The town folk below gazed in startled wonder
Suddenly a clap of lightning gold thunder
Above the dragon silently flies
Under dark black raven skies
Gliding lower, ever near
People scatter in total fear
For, they know this majestic beast
On their children it does feast
Then suddenly without a sound
One small boy stood his ground
For this chap, he had brains
Knew he could douse the dragon’s flames
Had the confidence he would prevail
In his hand a water filled pail
The dragon swooped in for the kill
The boy just stood there perfectly still
The boy then with the deadliest of aims
Threw the bucket, extinguished the flames
The dragon let out a piercing scream
Then flew off in a puff of steam
The boy had remembered a book he once read
Some weeks prior before going to bed
So, he knew what to do, he rightly boasted
“Dragons like their children roasted”
This boy was special, very special indeed
The only one in town, who had learned how to read
Going to school to learn everyday
While all the others just stayed away
From that day forward, no one was a fool
Learning to read and going to school
Wherever they went every son and daughter
Always equipped with a bucket of water.
