The Tale of Lake Semerwater
One night an angel disguised as a beggar,
set foot in a large town beside Lake Semer.
And asked the townsfolk to offer him shelter,
some food and some drink from the severe weather.
But none would take in this poor lonely beggar,
accept for a couple on the water's par.
Who fed him oatcakes and a cup of fresh milk,
and settled him in bed with linen of silk.
The morn came soon and he bid them sweet farewell,
but he cursed the people who had done him ill.
Semerwater rise, semerwater sink,
but save the home that gave me food and drink.
As fast as lightning, the city was flooded,
the people ran scarce, as fast as they could'eth.
They cried out in the bell tower but none could help,
the town who ignored the beggar, was laid to rest.
The old couple were saved, for they showed great love,
To a stranger, a beggar, lowest of low.
Till this day the remains of the town do lie,
In the depths of Lake Semer for ages by.
