The Supermarket Singer

We’re away from our home for a wedding So we drove to explore a new town. Found a cool-looking shop And decided to stop But, while strolling the aisles up and down… We heard music and noticed a singer Belting tunes with a mic in his hand. Shoppers didn’t take heed But we loved it, for we’d Only known songs in stores that were canned. We stood rapt ‘til he wrapped his performance And we thanked him for making our day. Guess you just never know When some talent will show To bring smiles in a never-seen way.

Ilene, my old grocery store was called Stop and Shop. Several times there was a man singing and playing violin into a microphone on a speaker right outside the large parking lot. Really. My husband thinks he may have been lip syncing. Who knows? I joined him joyfully as I walked into the produce isle with a smile, as he continued from the parking lot. Your poem brought me that cute memory. :0)

Nicely penned, Ilene, and quite a surprise for me too. But didn't he ask for a buck or two --- and then a tip?! ~ Mercy Me, gw

funny you should say that, gershon! my husband asked the manager if we should tip him and we were told it was not allowed. the singer was happy that we complimented him, though...

An interesting experience. I have heard of towns that have a town troubadour that you will find singing in various places.

this was new to me, jerry. the store manager told us that they have singers only on the weekends and that customers enjoy it, but everyone we saw was just ignoring him...
