The Spark
That bright spark from ever folding inner night
That effulgence that escapes through the eyes
And assures the brain we are upward and right
That flame's flicker that never dies
That grants vigor to those weary
That wander ever toward its light
The shaded light we were taught to dim
That grace the heads of angels and cherubim
But fill those with fear that ever walk the dark
Fearing our light make falsehood an easy mark
Enough of catering to secrets and lies
Enough of averting the light in our eyes
We are that lantern that lead the way
Toward a future free of ransoms to pay
Where virtues like honor and compassion
Are pillars and not an old trending fashion
Where valor and sacrifice alight paradise
And loyalty is not for sale at any price
Where if we choose it, our light becomes day
If we refuse it, darkness can't obstruct the way
No one cloaked in shadow has ever had good to say
Only where to look for the truth that lies hid away
If you play with matches, you may get burned
It's one of the simplest and earliest truths learned
The same goes for darkness and wand'ring ‘midst shadow
There, whispers won't remind you of your inner glow
Lost in the ever folding inner night
Alone with fears and doubts to fight
And the feeling or memory that something's not right
You're right, life's an illusion, and you made of light
It's why the masses flock to you
The simple measure of what is true
Flickering in the now, breathing in the now
Making shining in the present our vow
Lead the way Lanterns!
Make that promise now!
