Notes About The Poem

The Scariest Word

The word, "Cancer"
Perhaps the scariest
in the English language.
There's no easy way
         to come to grips
with this deadly,
unforgiving disease.
It doesn't respect
         age or gender.
Unimaginable
the tremendous damage
It inflicts
on the human body,
how it badly ages sufferers
       physically.
Cruel, what it does
           to one's spirit;
the excruciating pain
  it causes
An absolute nightmare
         of a disease!
Oftentimes,
it invades the body
unbidden
And wreaks havoc.
       It claims
far too many lives
on a daily basis.
Not even non-smokers.
            are immune.
The odds of surviving cancer
grim, if detected late.
But the good news is,
it's not an automatic
death sentence.
  To anyone
        battling cancer...
hold onto hope,
        fight on!
With your support system
              and God
right by your side
You'll beat it.

I am so glad that you wrote this poem. My theory is that the ones who do not expect to die will live much longer and may beat it totally. "People beat it Now more than ever. " You have given us hope, Edward. This is a wow!
