The Proposal: Six Relatives

I got up in the morning because my mom yelled, as she usually does…… Everyone was busy with their own work That my mother had assigned… When I entered the kitchen, Mom said to me, “Don’t laugh too much. You should be more polite today”… She laughed loudly with her friends while I was passing the kitchen… Then I entered the living room and Dad said to me, “Don’t talk too much. You should be more careful today”. My Dad hated talkativeness… I felt my head a mere mayhem, so I sneaked into my room. Then my sister said to me, “Be ready; Don’t think too much”. But she is the one that thinks too much... After I wore my saree, my little sister came and applied some makeup soon.. Then she said, “You look beautiful”. She always admires my beauty… Finally, my brother and sister- in law entered my room and said, “Matchmaker won’t come today… But don’t worry. We’re here to help you. My soul sobbed, asking me, “Is this the last time?” Nov. 21, 2020 Six Relatives Poetry Contest Contest Sponsor: Caren Krutsinger

This is a beautiful poem, Rashini. You present how you got ready for the would be husband's arrival and how your close relatives' reacted at the time differently. You so realistically present how each tries to control you and limit your freedom so you get the necessary training that the tradition expects from a woman in her married life. Well-done, Rashini, and wish you Good Luck in the Contest!!
