Notes About The Poem

The Price of Love

Listen to poem:
My heart has soared
and known true love
so now I’m here
my lover’s gone

Death has come
to claim his soul
death took him
in the night of day

And in the darkest
darkness of despair
left me bruised
too stunned with grief

Alone the two of us
I took my love
on his last journey
as far as I dared go

Death I could tell
was kind that day
as she cradled him
gently in her arms

With maternal grace
she held his body's shell
like he’d always been the special child
meant to come back home one day

For he had loved
as much as he could love
his heart was gold, his soul was pure
he’d given all he ever could

Time suddenly has paused
the world has stopped
there is no meaning
no rhyme or reason

I focus on the love he gave
abundantly and freely
and not on the abyss-ful void
that’s left behind

After all
was there ever any doubt
there’d be a price to pay
for having loved

Line, And what a love it is, not was. That kind of love is rare and will live forever. Your poem makes us yearn for just taste of that. The power of this poem makes me feel love. I believe love is a living energy and not just words. That love energy never dies. There is no doubt your lover will feel your love for eternity just as you will his. The price you pay is being separated from your lover but not his love. And someday when you join him, what a reunion that will be!

I have always wrestled with the idea that although life is a prize that is given to us; it is one that is inevitably taken away from us too. Your poem, Line, of love and loss and the emotions tied to both is poignant in its message and beautifully crafted.

Line, this is so strong that I fear it is a true narrative. So explicit that my heart sends sympathy to your mourning. Yet as you present Mother Death so gentle in her touch, it is comforting also. Thank you for this portrait of hours. Blessings on your day. sally

Thank you very much, Sally. I was lucky that my husband passed away peacefully and he was a lovely man. He was afflicted with polio as a child, and the end brought to mind many parallels.
