The Power of Self Esteem

Growing up in foster care
I always felt so alone
Looking for a place to call home
Not ever knowing If I will
Thinking If I could just know the feeling of being loved
How my heart longed for that acceptance
Only knowing the company of doubt and rejection
I put up a cold front to keep the world from seeing
The weakness inside me
That always kept me needing
The fact that I was scared
To know if anyone cared
I would reach out in misunderstood ways
Only seeing shadows of memories in my mind everyday
I pushed it aside though
So I could make room for the bigger picture
That the happiness I make
Can make my life richer
So I started to love myself
I guess it really showed
Because people picked up on it
Showed me love and compassion
Which really help me grow
The power of self esteem
Is a wonderful thing to know
