The Poetry Olympics

Who wants to act their age?
Not me, count me out!
Who wants to be King of the Hill?
Remember that game?
It makes me quite ill.

Why can't we just be ourselves?
Instead of proving we are the best
of the bunch.
The Olympics of Poetry?
POTD, first, second, third or honorable 
mention.
Do these bind us together or a cause for 
separation and dissension?

I'd much rather see plain enjoyment of each 
other's poetry.
Where you are you and I am me.
A poem, further should stand on it's own.
No videos, no images, just let the
poet's words roam.

Think of Poe, Shakespeare, Cummings or 
Longfellow.
If their words cannot reach us on their own,
Must we find an image or video to drive the 
point home?

Such is the age we live in,when
words no longer matter?
But we must, oh,we drool for an image.
To fill the void, when it's the poets
job to be the artistic master!

Tom Cunningham January 24, 2020 at 10:22 AM I think you've written what a lot on here think Panagiota , but we're here to write poetry and enjoy it, our lives don't depend on it, some seem to think it does. The real world doesnt give a hoot how we stand here at all. How we treat our family, friends and participate in making others happy is far more significant, Panagiota xx

Met too many with their names up in lights, but many away are sad, lonely, and yearn for true friendship. I too avoid competitions in poetry. Even those who run contests get abusive mail From losers! We are not in grade school, hunting for gold stars from the teacher, are we? Yes, some are. That's fine. If you are inner-directed you don't need any applause nor your name in lights. I do not like the POTD either. Though most poetry sites have them.be here to write well. Others here for other reasons?
