The Pink City
At the edge of the Thar desert,
the reposed stilled sands sculpted
petrified waves of old dunes buried
in the carved rocky pediment
of the rolling train of the Aravalli hills.
The contorted contours configuring
the undulating landscape topography
shaped the cradle of this ancient city.
The archaic forts on the chiseled hill-top
stand like regiment of outdated sentinels
on the ramparts of their glorious history.
Corrugated crimson stone walls cascading
on the wind-scraped craggy ridges,
garland the pictorial cityscape portrait.
Tinsel of drizzling moonbeam in satin nights
paint murals with stardust on concrete canvas,
framed on the smoky desert sky.
Passing through the sculpted gateways
the lattice of the orthogonal roads,
outlines the rectangular facets
of the vintage building blocks,
the symbol of cityscape cubism.
Painted pink with the patina of lotus,
the fresco of this chromatic city
carries the fancy imprint of the royalty.
Fading out fast within the creeping shadows
of the overgrowing skyscrapers,
its splendor still survives.
