The Pest

Tick, tick, tock,
Of the old clock,
Down went the door,
Out came my crime!

‘Yes, I killed him.
Across from the stairs you’ll find him twitching —
Alone. Pinned on the floor.
You would have done the same,
I know it. For there was a Noise
That scratched, bit, scraped, clawed,
Ate, chewed, slashed and gnawed
At your ears. And your mind too -
Then for the encore: it scuttled into my head
Like the buzz of a drill,
Bored a hole like a lazy workman and took a smoke break,
And then it gets to the brain —
It grows, until it is all you know,
Then it must stop. It must
Stop. It. Stop.

So am I then truly to blame,
If you would have done the same?
‘Cus I’ll show you the scene,
I have already placed the daffodil-yellow tape.
You’re welcome.
But you will have to forgive me;
The tape has small bees on it, it was all I had left
And for the handcuffs, on the table there,
I must have got some blood on the edge,
Though just my blood, if I had to roll the dice.
Snake eyes!
Don't worry,
I can hold my hands behind my back
If that is easiest for you?

I have zero regrets.
Between you and me, I would kill again,
Though you mustn’t say!
Oh to feel it try and escape once more
And flap its wings like a webbed moth!
That's the trick:
You kill the lights and you kill it.
It'd be a damned shame if some photons stole your credit.

And they always ask, does it sting you when you kill?
Does it bite at your soul to end life?
My response is always the same:
Imagine a banker. Give him a stone,
Grey, ugly and sharp;
Strip him bare
And ask him to massacre a home invader,
Before any homes have been invaded.
And inevitably, with empty faces, they will ignore the lack of clothes;
The horror!

Oh, the curfew is at six, before you ask.
So just one more question —
If you insist,
Then you must leave
I have a routine you know?
And your lights are like a drill into my head!

Only kidding.

Although, you really should go now.
That was the last fly in my house
So I shouldn’t need you again soon.
Plus my hands hurt!’

Tick, tick, tock,
Six on the clock,
The buzz is gone,
A killer runs free!
