The Perfect Poem : and the Truth Is
and the truth is, the truth is
there is no such thing as the perfect poem
syllable count and line and verse
the poet lays out his tools to show them
his best rhymes and worst to curse
and the truth is, the truth is
there is no subject worthy of best
no scan and sound better than all
a poem is a work of art not a test
the higher it gets, the further it can fall
and the truth is, the truth is
the feet stutter, the rhyme flattens
hours, days, weeks in the making
more words, more stanzas it fattens
the poet knows if the poem is faking
and the truth is, the truth is
the guard is up to be taken down
the poem expects to be picked clean
the poet bloodied, sporting a frown
poem obscure yet meaning to be seen
and the truth is, the truth is
before you with all due charity
if you see it that way, this way
words set out in an offer of clarity
today is this poems day
and the truth is, the truth is
the poem is
bang, flash, wallop, fizz
the poem is
bang, flash, wallop, fizz
the poem is
as perfect as
it is, is it, it is.
