The Parrot and the Cat

Both were pets at home— The cute parrot and the black cat. We loved both—almost equally. They too loved us beyond measure, But didn’t at all like each other. Each thought that the other was One too many! We did not encage Cutie. Thought it a sin. But that was all our sin— As it turned out. When we were alert, As we were almost always, Blackie was on her best behaviour. But she was only waiting— Watchfully, patiently. She knew only too well that the best way To resist a temptation is To yield to it. So one day, as Cutie was perched cozily On our tiny toddler’s shoulders, She swooped down: kra..kra…kra. Oh, the rest is silence! So, what’s dear to you May be dinner to another!

Thank you, Patricia, for your wise comment. Another poet, Julie, actually found fault with me for not protecting the bird!
