The Pain I Hide

It rains inside of me though sun I see
The clouds I know and cuts and scars and tears
I hide from you the chain that binds to me
And wrap despairs’ cloak safe about my fears
My smile belies my pain. It disappears

I fight so hard to wear a brighter shroud
And break the screams I hear go through my head
To free my shame and speak its’ name aloud
And let you see my pain each time I bled
But then I think I’m better off just dead

This is dedicated to my niece, who has fought depression for years, cutting and suicide attempt. She still struggles but she is strong and determined to beat it. She has learned to reach out for help and I love her dearly.

It is very difficult to reach out for help. I am so glad that your niece has done this. I am sure that all your support and support of her family will help her heal and find other ways to deal with pain. Your poem is beautifully written Jeanne. Congratulations on your deserving win! xxoo

You depict the pain of your niece so beautifully in poetic form - I hope with all my heart that with reaching out for help and with you by her side with your love and caring, she will overcome the worst and perhaps even get completely better. My thoughts are with you and your niece, God Bless, Jennifer.

And hard to know how to help. Sometimes just to listen and not judge is the best help I can give her.

A gorgeous write, and so accurate. The feelings you expressed are well done; because I thought it was you and I was saying "Oh, no!" I am still saying "oh, no," and sad it is your niece. So glad she is reaching out; that is a BIG step a BIG BIG BIG step. So glad of that! Lovely poem, my friend. A tribute.

It was shock when she tried suicide, but I had feared she'd become a cutter when she was young and took siccors to everything when she got mad...and around age 11 she started cutting herself...she hid it well. If not for suicide attempt we would never have found it out and got her the help she needed. Everyday is a gift to have her...especially knowing so many don't get that second chance.
