The One That Got Away

I think she knew, I wasn’t sure, About the way I felt, That every time she spoke to me, My heart would almost melt. Her long dark hair enchanted me, I loved her perfect smile, We’d talk meaningless trivia, So I could stay a while. I once sent her a valentine, The words I still recall, But I was shy and nervous then, Her, confident and tall. On holiday, a postcard, I did send to her address, Perhaps if I had asked her out, She’d maybe have said yes. Few years ago I found out, That she lives in USA, She’s something of an expert, In corrosion so they say. She told me of her children, And I told her about mine, I asked if she recalled me, Yes, her memory was fine. So she’s the one who got away, Though never cruel or mean, But last time that I saw her, We were both only sixteen!

40 years later and I shared it with the person who it’s about! I’m pleased to say she loved it and thanked me for sharing it. Just thought I’d share that with any soupers who read the rhyme.

This is delicately done. Charming and innocent.
