The Masnavi of Giti and Saeed - Part 6, 7 and 8
Part Six — The Story Begins
The tale begins, as poets say,
Of lovers two who found their way.
That radiant child, so young and fair,
A cypress tall with flowing hair.
The envy of all idols bright,
With beauty born to charm the sight.
Wherever she would softly tread,
A thousand hearts behind her fled.
That idol—when her veil was drawn,
The pride of false gods was withdrawn.
From childhood, magic touched her frame,
Each glance concealed love's sweetest game.
Wherever she would sit and dine,
Sweet chaos flowed like sacred wine.
It seems from youth that Saeed's eyes
Had sought her out through earth and skies.
No dream he had but meeting her,
The world seemed kind when hopes would stir.
Each glance he cast was drawn her way,
Love-struck by her both night and day.
To no one else did he give heed,
Just her sweet face was all his need.
Part Seven — Saeed's Plea to See Giti
The years flowed by in silent stream,
Till fate fulfilled his sweetest dream.
Sweet Giti, once a laughing bud,
Now bloomed like roses after flood.
A flower turned to garden's queen,
The fairest sight that eyes have seen.
As tall as cypress, proud and free,
More awesome than eternity!
One day the yearning, restless flame
Sent her a message signed his name:
"O teasing one, so light and shy,
O beauty born to make hearts fly!
Grant me the gift to see you near,
To feel your breath, to hold you dear.
To speak of time's unkind disguise,
Of sleepless nights and weeping eyes.
Of longing's wound and sorrow's sea,
Of patient pain and misery.
If you allow, I'll humbly come,
Perhaps fate's will shall make us one."
Part Eight — Giti's Reply to Saeed
When Giti gave her soft consent
And spoke of meeting, heaven-sent,
Like lightning, Saeed rose in delight,
His soul ablaze with love's pure light.
Like wind he flew to meet his flame,
His heart on fire, his lips her name.
He thought of nothing but embrace,
Beyond all rules, he sought her face.
A pilgrim thirsting for the spring,
He came to her, his everything.
And everywhere his gaze would fall,
He saw her beauty, soul and all.
Like moonlight breaking through the cloud,
Her radiance wrapped him like a shroud.
Sweet love came—patience fled away,
Desire unchained his heart that day.
The love once hidden, fierce and high,
Now ruled the earth and starlit sky.
From veils emerged that silent fire,
And burned his soul with sweet desire.
