The Magic Football 2
Inspired by “The Magic Football 2” by Norman Rockwell
Your search is over. You have found
a work in oils that makes a sound.
Look and listen, my friend!
I am the painting that you seek.
Behold my magic and mystique.
It is to you, good man, I speak,
so, won’t you please attend?
A young man, quite a lot like you,
his books, would wearily pursue,
in the dull and dimming dark.
Nothing lodging on his bookshelf
prepared him for a fairy or an elf.
Could he get a grip on himself?
The little gnome said, “Hark!”
An enchantment infused the air,
inhabiting the young man’s stare,
as he leaned forward, rapt.
The oddish creature that appeared,
pointing to him, strange and weird,
conjured the sound of a crowd that cheered
from the magic he had tapped.
The boy tossed his boring book aside.
Football stardom wouldn’t be denied.
He’d heard the wily elf exclaim,
“You will not be that nerd or chump.
You’ll catch that ball, air-filled and plump,
with a heroic flying jump
and catapult to fame!”
Thank you, sir, for listening well,
but there are a few things oils won’t tell -
things like “Was he lazy?”
or “Should one trust football or trust books?”
...and though you can hear me, not just look,
say that to your friends and they’ll be shook
and say that you are crazy.
