The Life of the Party

Rising
sprawled
amid the carcasses
of demons quelled
strewn
like soldiers slain
spent munitions
drained of all their fire
their bloodshed pooled
puddles
of watered down
egos and woes

glisten

in the morning light

as hangover destined
in reflection
one half dead
and addicted
vain plan to abstain
finds itself
shot down

again

Lovely oxymoron "Rising sprawled". Perfectly maudlin and credibly deniable. Like morose mumbles. A tragic scene masterfully conveyed.

Hello Maureen, people do drink to have a good time. Only to awake in morning with a hang over. Have a nice day my friend. Hugs Darlene..

Been there, done that! In my younger days I have woken sprawled among a lot of dead soldiers. My body told my brain it did not agree with what I decided to do the night before. My mind tried to warn me but my heart said it would be ok.

I'm working on old fart. I'm on a cargo tricycle now, have dog must travel~ together. I think my two wheeled days may be over, I cannot afford another concussion. I can't express how much "sharp mind" means to me, with the difficulty I am having with my brain.Thank you Tim. Cheers (a nice smoky peaty single malt) my friend. xomo

I like reading your stuff, you have a sharp mind with a skewed perspective that is really good!

Im a old fart now but back in the day I rode my Harley and had some experiences. My vision got bad and I started having the feeling my time was coming for a crash. So I sold it, got spiritual and changed my life. Being an old Irishman I still enjoy a shot of Jameson on the rocks from time to time. If our paths had crossed I am sure we would have had a grand time.

Hello Maureen … brutally true and there's too much of it. The next morning tells the story of remorse in many cases - thanks Maureen - Lindsay

The title's "life" wonderfully juxtaposes the images of the drunken "dead". And the line "shot down" ties everything together Maureen. Brilliant.

Thank you Jeff! The beauty of writing for a contest sponsor is the way it pushes your muse in new directions; the moment I removed the words "beer cans" this one took on a life of its own. ;), xomo!
