Poet’s note: If birds, bees, and beasts do not expect their young to look after them when they are old, is it good enough a reason to expect the same in human beings? The lonely old is a serious problem as families increasingly break. What the old woman in this piece in blank verse is largely missing in life is the company of loved ones. Old age homes or financial security is no solution. The old suffer silently and in mute dignity. And, if I may add, the world is watching helplessly.
