The King of Kegs

The King of Kegs He was the town drunk, that everyone loved. Didn't care about being arrested nor his children going food less. But at the bar, oh such a big hit. Always knew tons of jokes, he was the King of the Kegs! And nary a night, was he not lit. The sobers, shall we say, judged him as socially, mentally and morally unfit. Such self-righteous boring twits! Who judged him to death, never thinking that they had major shortcomings and faults, too! As we say in the USA, these prigs thought they were it! They had no idea he was attending recovery meetings at night. They so wrongly were condemning his addictive plight. The King of Kegs became quite sober. Moreover, he saved many, many others from death. He even opened a mission is southern  LA that operates to this day and helped thousands to give  up the booze and live a life with nary a drop of alcohol to begin  their day. Nope, you won't hear of such heroes like this on the news, no! Too busy decrying the evil men do. After all, a fat paycheck buys them the best shoes. Things that are magnificent, my friends simply are not worthy of news. +Here's to all the good people in the  world, including all those suffering from addictions, their families and those who do not understand that it is both a psychological and physical addiction, not a moral one.+ August 3, 2019 3:45am PST

I like Gershon (from comment below) was ready to give up on the King of Kegs in the first lines...you reminded me that there is always hope and how beautiful redemption is :)

Truly a heartwarming write, with a piercing message... To my own shame, I found myself rooting against this 'loser,' this 'King of Kegs,' for the first two stanzas.... Someone once told me: Even those on Death Row were once some mother's precious baby. I need to keep it mind. Thanks for the reminder. ~ Gershon

All you said is true. God created us all. People do not understand alcoholism. And I am not going to explain it. I do know, there are no perfect people in the world. Besides being a baby, his prime Creator was God. "Seek ye to understand, not be understood" Thank you, constant friend. Panagiota XoXo

Sharing with you this poignant video my nephew shared on FB. Gives a glimpse into the life that many have. Let me know what you think. Soupmail. Check out on youtube NF-Leave Me Alone

You have a true art of saying all I wanted to say in one sentence, "People are Not Their Addictions." My prayers to your nephew, who has turned his life over to the Lord and helping others with same. It's important he shares his recovery. Perfect. Will check You Tube and soup you. Panagiota XoXo

And truly a sad affair... some lovely people down the drain...and many others following too... Maybe life's a garden of roses with lots of thorns... some live it some share it, some bleed it and some die for it.... A conscious write ...

Arturo, your comment is so touching! Thank you for sharing. Many writers are known alcoholics and they have died. Today add drugs. Then they have a dual addiction. Anyone not addicted should be so very happy. Love, Panagiota xoxo

Well written Panagiota, addiction for drink or drugs is the scourge of mankind. We don't know half of what suffering people go through but many quick to judge and condemn. Tom

Grateful for people like you in this universe! We need more of you on this planet.judgement is indeed swift and harsh. Plus the families are hurt. People do recover. Some permanently. Some on Off and on. But denial on all sides leads to death. Panagiota. XoXo
