The Inner Sanctum
The party started
Conversations, awkwardness
Pop…pop, laughter
The smoke released
like a genie in a bottle
His wishes found in
the inner sanctum
Hard core stuff
He’s adrift
Left the party
by way of sea
drifting endlessly
Always the inner
sanctum…there goes
his sanity
Doesn’t care
Davy Jones
just begging him
to jump in
His legs dangle
over the edge
His needles
like jellyfish
sting
But he begged for mercy
to the unknown
There’s something else
in the whirlpool
He had kicked the can
in the backyard
of the parking lot
Often pacing
waiting for the fish
to swim out
He had to be somewhere
yet he was nowhere
Go ask Alice
the neon sign
always blinking
As if a banquet
church lets out
He almost believes
when the kids jump about
The sun seems to stun
even on a cloudy day
So he knows
his boat must speed
inside the cave
He had already thrown back
the waves
He’s found
the inner sanctum
where the faithful pray
He’s walking on water
He’s trusted someone
to catch him
as he falls back
He’s dead
then alive again
Baptized…born again
He can trust Jesus Christ
It’s never awkward
at His feet
Wide-eyed, he listens
and he prays
to the One who saved him
for all eternity
