The Ice River

Let's take a walk,
Let's have a talk
Let's take a stroll down to the ice river,
I swear the water is bitter.
But that don't stop the people from throwing in their Silver,
You may be wondering why they do this,
I say don't think so loudly or you might meet one of their strong men's fists,
Because this river is something you don't want to mess with.
I guess you could call it a urban legend,
About a woman of all the things.
They say she could put anyone to a dreamless sleep with her singing,
But her heart was icy and bitter.
A man whom she did love treated her horrible,
But to the town folks they looked so adorable!
It was heard that the lies and drinking got to be to much for her,
And so along with her beauty and all her sliver,
She plunged herself into the town's river.
And so the town named the river Ice River,
In remembrance of the woman who had a voice as beautiful as silver.
Its not really a unique looking river about the same size of any other kind,
But somehow the town folk thinks its purpose is purely unrefined.
I can't tell you the reason why,
And so you ask if I have been here many times?
I reply aye,
But I've already throwed all my silver into the Ice River.

Self sacrifice can be so noble in it's tragedy, a defiance that deserves blue admiration. I love the conversational style of this poem Ettie...J.A.B.
