The Highway Doesn'T Care If You'Re On Your Way Home

The Lord gives us so many blessings. I am lucky to have him on my side. I woke tired, not too motivated to do much. I use my age for my slowness, I guess a crush. I did walk Peanut my dog a few times, he makes sure of it, he will detour me, every day to ensure. About four this afternoon I decided to go into town. I wished I had never walked out the door. I live in a small-town, a farming community. I love the rural countryside. I got in my car and drove down the Highway. A mile from my home there were people in the way. Cars in front were driving slowly, got closer to the parked cars. People were sitting around, an empty semi-flatbed parked to the side. I did see some white debris on the side of the road, but no car that might have been in an accident. I passed the semi flatbed and behind it laid a motorcycle on its side. Then, I saw the horror. A few feet back from the cycle, a man laid on the ground with his back facing me, in a fetal position, wearing a leather jacket, and helmet. There was a man sitting on the back of his heels watching over the injured person (I think the cyclist was dead). There were still people pulling over and parking to see what was going on. I couldn't stop. All I could do but cry and pray for the person. Why were the other people not around him to help? They were all on the other side of the semi-flatbed. I finally got to the light almost a mile away and pulled over because a firetruck, ambulance, and police coming towards my direction. However, it didn't go on straight towards the accident, they took a side highway.
Death The highway doesn't care if you're young or old. The highway doesn't care if you're going home. The highway doesn't care if you have loved ones.

Eve, it was very difficult for me to read this work of profound prose poetry. My dear best friend’s husband was just such a cyclist killed in a horrible accident when he was on his way home & hit on the side at a highway intersection. Their daughter was 2. A difficult, profound, heart wrenching, but necessary piece. xosally

Eve, almost all people have cell phones. Someone always calls the necessary help. Never touch a body. I don’t think you nor I are trained EMT’s. The people were waiting for the ambulance to arrive. I am so sorry you saw that.don’t blame the cyclist. He could have been hit. I saw a cyclist literally thrown in the air once! Called the Highway Patrol as it was rush hour. I cried for 40 minutes going home. Sorry, Eve.#death will get each of us. #Fact. Highway or no highway. Pangie

Pangie, I still see him on my mind. My sister- in-law did mention there quite a few accidents on this highway. Too many side roads to take , no stop lights to help. Even my own son a couple of years ago, on the same highway a mile from where I live, went straight to the guard-rail to miss a car that got right in front of him. Total the pickup, but he only broke an ankle. Again God blessed me and my son.

I noticed the comments all making the cyclist wrong. Who are they? Reporters on the scene at that moment? No and no! but are Judges and jury, all in one. How sad. How fast we think we know it all Pangie…we live on other continents even, but we know what happened thousands of miles away? That is terribly sad and vacuous! Where did compassion go? Pangie

Hi Eve, the tragic accidents that happen are devastating - one night we passed an accident, my dad parked, I remember he phoned an emergency number and told them to come quick, the driver was bent over the steering wheel crying, people gathered, police and ambulance arrived, it was two motor cyclists, the one beheaded, the second was thrown a good 35 away, his body mangled - the newspaper reported. Speed and arrogance, anger and too much of dad's money! Speed, never speed! Enjoyed your write my friend. Blessings, Jen.
