The Hereafter
As our Lord was resurrected
He left behind symbols of the torture to which He was subjected
To remind us of his sacrifice
With the belief that they will suffice
What symbols are these you ask
But in this poem I will unmask
Dogwood trees are said to have made his cross
Surely by now it is covered by moss
Next, is the Easter lily
I know to nonbelievers this may sound silly.
It is written that when Jesus perspired from the cross
A white lily would pop up to signify His loss.
Palm branches are a symbol of a tropical location
But did you know Israelites laid these down for Jesus as he entered Jerusalem prior to His crucifixion.
These branches signify victory and peace
For this, some people place palm branches on their mantle piece
Believe it or not, butterflies are a symbol of His resurrection
Both have our affection
A delicacy that comes to mind is hot cross buns
Made of spices believed to be used in Jesus’ burial preparations passed on to daughters and sons.
A cross made from flour paste signifies His crucifix
Though you can find these at a bakery, this treat does not come in a cake mix.
We partake in this tasty treat on Good Friday
Some pair it with a nice Cabernet
The empty tomb signifies thee we promise of rebirth when you walk with the Lord
His sacrifice is to be adored
The empty tomb is the mystery of resurrection
In hopes of an otherworldly connection
A Paschal candle made of beeswax
That we try not to let drip on our jackets or slacks
Marked with a cross, alpha and omega, and the year
Smaller candles are lit by our peer
This represents the light of Jesus to this in attendance as well as for those afar
Regardless of who or where they are
A couple of other symbol are rabbits and baby chicks
Do not fall for the devil’s tricks
A great symbol of Easter to bring home as a pet
That some might regret
Lambs symbolize Jesus Himself
As He is the human embodiment of the Paschal lamb itself
A truly sacrificial animal during biblical time
I wonder if lamb tastes good with thyme
The most powerful symbol is the cross
To some, they may be at a loss
Some churches add spikes and a thorn crown
At times, you may see crosses outside on church lawns around town.
Easter is a powerful message for believers
Taught at a young age by Sunday school teachers
This message is expanded on by the pastor
As we prepare to enter the hereafter.
