The Greatest Power
I think of pain at hands of hate
I was so young and fear so great
But I grew up and he grew old
And then his words were not so bold
And all the power he would wield
Became the power he would yield
His fist no longer to explore
The body of a child, demure
But what of hate and violence
I’d think but it would make no sense
For what could charge a man to be
So full of rage and why hate me
I grew and learned his circumstance
He too was beaten every chance
A child was he who lived with pain
And liquor fueled what would remain
Forgiveness was the only key
To heal the heart that beat in me
I let it go and he long passed
Though thoughts still linger, overcast
But lessons learned will always live
The greatest power, to forgive
