The Giver

He gave me worry; he gave me stress.
Everyone BUT me he tried to impress.

He gave me twinges of jealousy
when flirting with girls in front of me.

He gave me loneliness many a night.
When he got mean, he gave me fright.

He gave me reasons that made no sense.
He gave me hurt, but with no recompense.

I gave forgiveness when he guilty stood,
but giving is not always something good.

Neither is taking always so great.
Take what you merit. Take not a fool’s fate.

He gave me heartache; he gave me pain.
I willingly took it again and again.

Great scheme Andrea. I hope this giving is not a perpetual cycle. Congratulations on the win! Linda

thanks so much for the inspiration, Regina. It is exaggerated but yes, at least half of this I have experienced, mostly in the past!

You say it so well Andrea..giving is not always good (neither is taking)--your poem stands out for me given what I thought the contest theme meant. The giver can be full of pain as you so well illustrate.

thanks Vijay, but I fear my different kind of interpretation will leave me off the winner list!

You found a creative approach to this contest by focusing on the dark side of giving. You're right, giving is not always good. And a good warning to 'take not a fool's fate'. Very nicely crafted, I hope it is a winner for you.
