The Girl In the Park

I was waiting at the bus stop, for the number nine to take me uptown, that’s when I saw her in the park, sitting crossed-legged on the ground. The sun reflected in her golden hair, her lips were blazing cherry red, strumming an old guitar, a ring of flowers around her head. I watched as her image shimmered in and out, of the early morning mist, and I wondered what it would be like, to give those lips a kiss. I thought maybe she was but a dream, a mirage from my tormented mind, I was lost and lonely, looking for any love I could find. Chorus: 300 thousand years ago, when *****Sapiens first walked the world, that first tall and handsome caveman, fell in love with that pretty cave girl. They’ve passed along their knowledge, through centuries of romantic advice, you’d have to think, surely by now, that we would be able to get it right. I thought what the hell, I’ll go over and say hello, perhaps she’ll be my life’s love, if I don’t try I’ll never know. It started out simple enough, with a conversation about the rain, but I felt right from the start, the lightning crackling in my brain. I asked her out for some coffee, then to dinner, a movie, and a dance, next came weekends at the seaside, filled with passion and romance. I met her parents then she met mine, and she moved in the following fall, shared with her the best of times, seems I’d finally had it all. (Repeat Chorus) As my job became more demanding, requiring weekends and overnights, the petty bickering soon turned into knockdown–drag-out fights. One night I came home to an empty house, a note left hanging on the door, It said her love for me is gone, she can’t take it anymore. I fell into a depression, only drugs, and alcohol eased the pain, I quit my job, I lost my house, it nearly drove me insane. That thought jerked me back to reality, a shiver shook my every bone, it’s not worth the hassle, I would rather live my life alone. (Repeat Chorus) So, I stepped onto the number nine, leaving that nightmare far behind me, I left her there to sing her song. Let some other fool buy her that coffee. 300 thousand years ago, when *****Sapiens first walked the world, that first tall and handsome caveman, fell in love with that pretty cave girl. They’ve passed along their knowledge, through centuries of romantic advice, I think I finally understand, there’s just no way to ever get it right.

What a story Jerry, when we start a relationship there is no way of knowing where it will lead and how it will end. Very few people get it right, the soul grows with every try and maybe some day we do get it right in the end.:)

So true, very few do ever get it right. But, I have a confession to make. My wife and I met when we were only 15. We got married at 18 and we will celebrate our 48th anniversary next month. I count myself one of the lucky few.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! So much to like here. I love what they did to "sapiens" snicker snicker, but I love your end rhymes and the story line is absolutely sound. The rhyming is exquisite considering what a message you have delivered. Have I said WOW? A fave for me!

Thank you so much Caren. I guess, technically, it is a banned word. But it still gives me a giggle. Have a wonderful day and try to stay cool.
