The Geometry of a Shared Bed

My husband and I
now own an adjustable bed.
It lifts about 90 degrees at the head
and 40 degrees at the foot.
An incredible invention except that
my husband likes it low, and I do not.
Our compromise isn’t to my liking!

Our mattress is California King -
72 inches wide and 84 inches long.
It provides roomy comfort for us and our pets,
yet without fail, my spouse
ends up sleeping on my side of the bed
facing me in the fetal position.
Opposites always, I sleep on my right side
and he sleeps on his left.
The cat, when it is there at all,
sleeps often at my feet.
Unequal is our bed’s positional balance
as I lie sometimes precariously on the edge
wishing for a separate bed – a queen size fit for me.

Sara Kendrick June 1, 2026 at 4:57 AM My husband and I slept on a queen-sized bed most of our married life and that worked very well for us. I have thought about getting one of those adjustable beds especially since at the end of my husband's life he needed one, but he got where he slept in his recline which sleeping in a recliner would have been uncomfortable to me except for a short nap so I slept in the king sized bed. I like the topic and humor. Sara K. In the future, I hope to have separate beds side by side because he doesn't want to even use the adjustments and I love them.

Kim Rodrigues May 29, 2026 at 11:12 AM We looked at those type of beds. I knew that would not be good idea for us. Best sleeping arrangement, the time we dropped in couple days early (with son’s consent) overnight and my grandbaby laid next to me…so uncomfortable…so delightful! LOL!

But my hubbie always wants me close by. I am like his security blanket or something. Haha

Joseph P. DiMino May 28, 2026 at 1:39 PM Ila and I gave up trying, we have separate beds but still meet up quite often in the kitchen for joyful reunions. As for the cat, we both like to sleep on the left side of the be, so we compromise -- I sleep on the right. A darling write. My response all in fun. Just a little truth...you will have to guess.
