Notes About The Poem
In loving memory of Kenny Rogers

The Gambler Says Goodbye

I'm the gambler with the empty hand
Even though she believes in me
Through the years, I've folded every plan
Twenty years ago, our skies were sunny

Even though she believes in me
They said, don't fall in love with a dreamer
Twenty years ago, our skies were sunny
As I chased islands in the stream

They said, don't fall in love with a dreamer
My lady lost much more than money
As I chased islands in the stream
Lucille, you shouldn't have bet on me

My lady lost much more than money
Through the years, I've folded every plan
Lucille, you shouldn't have bet on me
I'm the gambler with the empty hand.

You certainly have a wide range of poetry forms going on, Michelle, I could learn a lot from you, and no less excellent, a Kenny Rogers Pantoum, sweet . . . : )

Unbelievably, Kenny sang with Dolly Parton and actually looked at her eyes! A nice tribute, Michelle! Aloha! Rico

Michelle, this is a wonderful tribute. Reading your poem brought back memories of where I was in my life when I first heard each of the songs. Much appreciated. "And somewhere in the darkness ~ The gambler he broke even..." ~Mark

Thank you, Mark - he had so many amazing songs, I had a hard time choosing, but went with my favorites

Great singer / Clever poem. I also loved "Coward Of The County" and his songs when fronting The First Edition: particularly "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town."
