The Freedom of the Song
If the song ever stops
Or the music fades away
If the maestro drops his arms
And the band doesn't play
When the rhyme doesn't listen
And no one hums along
Could you breathe without the freedom of a song
.
Would the earth cease to spin
Would the ocean cease to swim
If the children couldn't sing
The sonnet of innocent refrain
If something stole your melody
Took away what you could not see
Could you live without the freedom of a song
.
When the lines wouldn't flow
When the psalmist ceased to know
If the stars in the heavens
Failed to reach the note
Could you listen
Without the freedom of a song
.
If the harmony went dark
If the North Star missed its mark
And the sun fell out of time
If the moon refused to rise
What would you see without the freedom of a song
.
If the Red Sea didn't part
Or David never played his harp
Or the temple curtain wasn't torn
Or there was no crown of thorns
Could we have ever sang oh Lord how great Thou art
.
It's been there all along
The flowing tempo of the song
The universe agrees
One majestic symphony
From a place and time we cannot fathom
Eternity still keeps the beat
I can feel I can taste and I can see
I can hear and I can sing of freedom in the song!
