The Fox, the Wolf, the Coyote
Night Sighs
I. the fox
fox slings by the road
we see his eyes glow like moons
he seeks a quick meal
body low and quick
he trots beside the gravel
and lifts up his nose
headlights capture him
his ready meal forgotten
he turns toward home
II. the wolves
two wolves in the pines
by the cabin they watch us
we are unaware
one male, one female
she in front, looking forward
he guards from behind
waiting for their prey
she carries the signal key
he follows her lead
III. the coyote
coyote is close
his song beckons me to come
a sigh in the night
I hear his welcome
haunting notes hang longingly
in the cold night air
morning reveals tracks
he waited for me to join
I sweep them away
