The Forbidden Heroes
Hawker Hurricane was his plane.
Karubin was chasing a German fighter
at tree top level, when his Hurricane
had run out of ammunition.
Karubin closed the distance
and climbed right above
the German fighter,
who crashed into the ground
when he had seen, underside of Hurricane
within arm’s reach of his cockpit.
The German pilot tried to avoid the collision,
reducing altitude without precision.
In 1944 on D-Day,
he and all members of his Squadron 303
flew many times
over the landing beaches.
Division 303 used its Spitfires
on various ground attack missions
on V-1 and V-2 launch sites,
located in the Netherlands.
Pilots from Squadron 303
claimed 126 kills in six weeks,
had 7 their pilots killed and 5 badly wounded,
but were not invited
to London Victory Parade in 1946
and Western betrayal of their country
culminated upon taking half of their homeland -
braking morale of the broken winners.
