Notes About The Poem

The Esteemed Poetry Critic

My brother, one year younger
and an athlete of some note,
once found my private notebook,
 seeing poetry I wrote.

Before that day I fancied that
 my writing held some unction;
I worked to craft each poem so
 to serve a noble function.

I'd rather hoped each one would stir
 its reader's soul profoundly,
but brother claims their value lies
 in helping souls sleep soundly.

ouch John! I write for me and hope other's like it, guess you can't please people all the time, and to be honest I'd prefer honesty from friends and family than a cut and paste comment on here, but i for one am a John Watt fan!:-) hugs Jan xx

Coming back to enjoy this one again, sorry I didn't comment earlier! Yes sometimes even our friends and family do not relate to our poetic side, like Jo said, I am so grateful for my PS family, am hoping you and yours are having a good March (also congrats for this being on the best new poems list!)

I don't know if I agree with your brother ... Your poetry certainly doesn't bore me... Well, to each his own, as they say ... I say, keep on writing if it makes you happy, John! ... I, too, was hesitant to let my family read my poetry. But, they do now and most of them have embraced it...

John, as poets, we hope those close to us are able to feel our emotions through poetry. (Sadly, that's not always the case). I'm so thankful that I'm able to be here at Poetry Soup. Sharing with other poets is a wonderful way to grow as a writer. (Many friends have been made as well). I cherish you and our friendship. Congratulations on this win. Keep smiling and creating your amazing poetry. My best to you. :) Hugs, Brandy

Hi John, our son has a very successful business - he has honors in journalism and has many corporate clients from all sectors - he edits documents and presentations and when I asked him to edit my work, he said sorry mom, but i find your poetic license and the way you word and structure your sentences is not proper English, I love him to bits and pieces and when I tell him I get POTD he is happy for me. It seems we all have a similar reaction from loved ones or friends. Hugs, blessings Jen

'All in the Family,' as they say. Sometimes our harshest critics are those whom we are closest to. What can you do? Bang him over the head with a strand of spaghetti. :) gw

Hey John…l really enjoyed this very relatable poem. I too have experienced complete lack of interest by some. Thats why we connect so easily with others here on P.S people who read, appreciate, support, enjoy, are moved and at times praise our poetry! Its wonderful to be seen and heard!! Many don't understand poetry…..their loss!!!hehe……Debx

Sally, I'm so glad you didn't let that event kill your desire to write (I'm sure many would say the same to you)! Your comment underscores the need for positivity to balance the negativity or simple neglect we feel when we attempt to share with others. I'm glad you stopped by today, thank you ~ John

Your brother's critique has made you a member of a not-too-exclusive club in which many of us are your fellow participants. Your short but well-crafted piece may have reported a bit of disappointment at your brother's opinion, but cheer up because I (and others, I'm sure) enjoyed and admired your poem. lol

Leo, thank you for coming by to visit and commiserate with me. We poets do tend to feel like odd ducks in the midst of regular society, but it's all the more reason to bond together over our shared passion. It's nice to meet you today at Soup ~ John

Most humorous John, I’ve been scoffed too for writing poetry by my sisters and it hurts… Belle

well, let's call it historical fiction, shall we? support from the few makes up for the silence (or mockery) of the many... thanks for your kind words ~ john

Well, it is good to know your brother is among a minority of readers John! But, your disappointment is palpable! I have had this experience. Thank you for sharing this heart ache! Even though he would relegate these writings to the bench, we, here on the soup, know they are on the all star roster! Blessings dear friend! Sending you blessings for your pen R&R bro!

Sam, I think many have had a similar experience of a less than enthusiastic reception to creations we have shared. The heartache of not being able to reach everyone is more than made up for by knowing that at least we are reaching a few! Grateful for your friendship ~ R&Rbro
