The Enemy
She tried to push her emotions down
Consuming externals seemed to help ease her pain
She cried herself to sleep most nights
Convinced, nothing in her life would ever change
The emotions, she had left them unattended
They just grew larger overtime
Being a victim, she effortlessly blamed others
In an attempt to cleanse her troubled mind
She worked hard to distract herself
Yet there was something beneath the surface, driving her pain
That's the irony of avoidance
Avoidance ensures the pain remains
She frantically push the thoughts down into the darkness
Unaware, the mind is not blind
Suppression leads to perturbation
Morning, noon, and night
Only time can provide a space
For honest reflection of the suppressed words
It allows for an opportunity to take responsibility
And utilize the sincere advice you fought, and never heard
Finally, she had met the true enemy
It was the voices she tried to deny
She realized, no matter who you try to blame
You have to start with the voice inside
Recovery can be a long hard road
Victimization can appear to be our destiny
But the moment we acknowledge, not suppress, the voice inside
Taking ownership sets us free
“We have met the enemy and he is us” Pogo
