The Dominion of Man

Humanity accosted the once pristine lake
judging it insentient.
Man spilled sewage into the lakes depths.

Humanity …screaming its dominion
pounds the placid waters with their toys.
Releasing an unbridled urge for speed
lubricating their pipes with liquor
demeaning the essence
and true nature of thirst…

Humanity_ hedonists to the core
quash the captive waters,
home to fish, fowl and fauna.
Spring fed lakes across the continents of man
treated with disdain
Girdled, damned, polluted
with oil of man…

Fishermen, such as He, can only cry.

Deb, even some of our local rivers and lakes have pollution and your poem makes a powerful statement. I am that fisherman and, yes, when I see the pollution -- be it born of oil or other toxins and emissions -- it makes me want to scream. Who would even eat the fish from such places if the aquatic creatures managed to survive at all? Love, Carolyn

And the lessons are never learned...one catastophe after another...you would think we could see the light. :( Great topic, sad facts...

:-< Exactly. Oddly today, I had a similar stream of thought. I was at a splash pad with my monkey-girl. Suddenly, I stared at the water, thought about Africa's drought and cringed, ashamed. What would they give for a mere cup of water, and here we are using it as entertainment. Fountains at city hall, watering our grasses, water balloons... I liked your poem a lot. I wonder, though, if those who are literally dying of thirst would muddy the waters (as we in the Western world do) or cherish it.
