The Depression

I have heard stories, passed down through the years, of the depression, the hardships, and fears. My grandmother lived it, and she never forgot, those days of hunger, and the pitiful sights. She told of the rations, and how they had to last, with her five little children, things went mighty fast. Winters were cold, the clothes froze on the line, no dryers back then, for drying them in. Coal for the heater, in a bucket nearby, and way before daylight, she would start feeding the fire. I really can't imagine, how hard things were, but I may get the chance real soon, it is looking more like a depression, for sure.

My dad's family went through these challenges too. They were a family of 12 who remain close through this day. This piece is a honest and heartfelt portrayal. Thank you for sharing it and for your kind words regarding my poem. Keep on writing. Karen

Very touching poem. It seems our government would learn from past experiences, but it seems they only care about themselves when they are suppose to be our servants. Thak you for your comments on Soap Sally. She was derived from stories my grandmother (living in Georgia back then) would tell us kids to keep us out of her smoke house. It did a good job. I also now live in Alabama near Andalusia.

I've been singing that song for the last couple of years, things just aren't adding up anymore. the sad part I think those of us who at one time were the middle class are the ones who are going to get hit hardest, I remember my folks and grandparents talking about those days, scary huh? Ron
