The Dark Rose

The smooth touch of her petals, once felt like velvet gliding across the naked skin - setting the soul ablaze in its wake. The sweet fragrance coming off her hot core, rising into the infinity, intoxicating every living being in its proximity. Its hue, like a pair of deep crimson lips smudged by her first lover’s kiss. Swaying to the wind’s rhythm without a care in the world, her days would pass by. She was naive - oblivious to the predators lurking nearby. For she trusted them with all her heart, while they craved for nothing but to take away her innocence in one cruel snatch. They waited for the right time to strike - the day when she would be in full bloom under the blue moon. The heavens cried - cried the sun, the stars and the moon, for they were about to witness the greatest sin of all. The onyx night seemed impenetrable, the winds waited with bated breath. The moon turned the other way - what you don’t see, didn’t happen. The stars hid behind the gloomy clouds, refusing to shed light on the dark tale. The waves crashed one last time, strong and hard against the withering rocks. The last of the flames died down, as they prepared for the inevitable scream. The glistening dew, slid down her green stem, As if kissing her thorns in a final goodbye; They came out of their hiding, at long last, out of the confines of their fake innocence. She looked on, helpless and in pain - the pain of betrayal above everything else. Her colour drained with every lash, leaving behind a shade of nothingness. She shivered, she trembled, she gave in with a silent cry, As they snarled in victory and pride. Everyone waited for the agonising shriek - something they would never receive. When the sun broke beyond the pink horizon, A breeze of sigh swept the fields. With a heavy heart they looked at her, Expecting the crumpled remains of her once beautiful self. But there she was, dancing in the winds - the past night long forgotten, or so they believed, Glistening in the daylight - a sinful black. A lone red petal fluttering at her feet. With a long, hard wind it flew far away, Taking away the last evidence of her former self. All’s well - they all thought, She’s happy, red or black. Days went by, so did nights, making everything a distant memory. The moon again shone, the winds blew again, The stars twinkled and the fire crackled. For she was happy, really she was, Red or black, alive or not.
