The Contest

Gallantly in the sky
A bird
Small but still defiantly
Marked out the perimeter of itts nest
In a wide protected space
And fiercely
Now above the trees
Against the anger of the breeze
Pursue
The haggard hawk
Its wingspan wide and wheeling vainly
In perpetual fray
I far below
Beheld the uneven contest of will
And felt a strange camradrie burn
Deep within my breast
For we who risk life to fight
For what we value most
Is not deterred by size or might
We have counted all that cost
And like a little bird
Will fly
Against the rage of hawk and wind
And by insistence win
