The Christmas Spirit
THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Christmas looks fattened around her
so gaunt
her eyes lift at the treasure of family
a shawl covers the chill
she texts to her cousin, her last
pray for me
This greedy cancer could have erased all this
she grins through gaping teeth
in a sleeping beauty coma, she’d stirred
prayers like incense
continual burning light to God
her only daughter’s married now
what more could she inquire of Him?
a choir sings bright
on the twenty seventh of December
after her last Christmas was spent
AFTERMATH
a doorbell knocks
tablet spills open
in shock
a birthday’s announced
Pam’s first day in heaven
