I was a somber little bird behind the bars of my heart.
Afraid to open the door of my cage and make a new start.
I had been a happy canary till he turned into a scarecrow.
Sad birds don't sing love songs. I stopped singing long ago.
My wings fluttered when I flew out and closed the door.
I was free but my heart told me it wasn't ready to soar
or forget the love it once held for the man it had known.
I escaped but my wounded heart cried long after I'd flown.
A canary once more, who will never live in a cage,
never fear a locked door, or a man filled with rage.
I sing my own songs, and whether it was right or wrong,
I flew far away from the prison where I did not belong.
