Notes About The Poem

The Caged Canary

I was a somber little bird behind the bars of my heart.
Afraid to open the door of my cage and make a new start.
I had been a happy canary till he turned into a scarecrow.
Sad birds don't sing love songs. I stopped singing long ago.
My wings fluttered when I flew out and closed the door.
I was free but my heart told me it wasn't ready to soar
or forget the love it once held for the man it had known.
I escaped but my wounded heart cried long after I'd flown.

A canary once more, who will never live in a cage,
never fear a locked door, or a man filled with rage.
I sing my own songs, and whether it was right or wrong,
I flew far away from the prison where I did not belong.

Lin sometimes like the Eagles song says "We live our lives in chains, but we don't even know we have the key." Fly Canary, fly... This write is an example of that. We control our destiny and choose to move on in life.

Thank you for the reminder of the Eagle's song. It doesn't hurt quite so much now to write about the past...not quite. What I feel now is more cheated out of what could've been, but even my anger over that is gone. I'm happy. Thanks for your thoughts, Michael.

Oh Lin I just love this little poem, it so reminded me of my canaries, I had about 8 at one stage and I even bred them but they got too much for me and like your poem I wanted them to be free but I just couldn't let them go as they will get eaten by the big birds we have flying around so I ended giving them away and I do miss them, take care.....Vera

Thanks for visiting, Vera. When I was little we always had canaries. My mother adored them.
