The Broken Circle
The ring was a circle that was meant to never end
Symbolising love of an intimate partner and friend
And when the meaning quickly breaks, the symbolism fades
Fragile trust fled by careless mistakes made
Farewell to the circle, it's symbolism has departed
The presence of uncertainty is the new meaning that started
No longer worn tightly with contentment and smiles,
For wounds will inevitably resurface in a while
And I no longer wait for the warmth in your eyes.
For the broken element has forced me to be wise
And the cosying, the cuddling I waited dearly for
I let go of because for you it was a chore
Stay silent when criticised was your parents' way
Through you it creeped into our circle and stayed
It infested our union, and stained our growth
It slowly eroded the promise of our oath
I share no accountability for the coping mechanisms you chose
I role modelled to communicate during smiles and woes
We were taught to communicate with words not hands
But the benefits were not something you could fully understand
The choice was always yours, to respond and not react
What followed was shaped by what you chose to enact.
I never taught you that emotions should always be swallowed
But your father's role modelling was what you ultimately followed
I learned that a home should be peaceful and kind
For communicating would have brought us peace of mind.
And one day my children, when older and wise,
May ask why our story was such a demise
I'll tell them with honesty, but never with shame,
That love should bring safety, not scars and pain.
They'll know that forgiveness and patience was a strength
But even patience will one day reach the end of its length
I'll teach them that love doesn't silence nor frighten,
That love doesn't break you but makes you feel lightened
Farewell to the symbolism. It's meaning is deceased
Farewell to the circle. From it's meaning I am released
