The Bindle Stiff

The Bindle Stiff
Parks have beckoned me with aplomb
A bench to sit and lay at night
with limpid dreams I share with naught
And realize that I’ve been taught
To set my sails for wondrous seas
To live a life with only me

What prompts a man to live on scraps
To brave the heat and cold as well
A labeled bum who dwells in hell

The day will come though it may hurt
To change my choice and then convert
Until that day I’ll travel on
A vagabond for parts unknown
To seek the mysteries of lore
And beg a sandwich on my tour

Hi Patricia: How kind of you to check out my oldies. the poem was inspiration from a song called "King of the road" by Roger Miller. a musician and song writer, if you want to look him up.

Alone is the operative word for me. To see life through another eyes and share the road would only broaden the experience. But that is my need you are a solo traveller and that makes me curious, There is great value in both. A thought provoking poem well written.

I looked up your reference in the first two lines and found there is such an entity which visits national parks - Bindlestiff Tours. I presume you did not take their tour but benefited from perhaps conversation and "lunch" with some who did. I like the emphasis in the last stanza on choice, for that is what life is about. Thanks for sharing.
